Kindergarten - Mrs. Wood

FCA Bentonville welcomes our kindergarten classes and families to the 2021-2022 school year! Throughout the year, students are taught explicity handwriting and phonics as well as Singapore Math, Science, and History. Students will also experience curriculum supporting field trips and participate in a variety of specials classes to expand their knowledge of the arts, engage in physical activity, and basic Spanish!

Orthography and Literacy:

Students will receive a strong foundation in Riggs phonics (Writing and Spelling Road to Reading and Thinking). Students will learn to correctly form all 26 letters, and pronounce all 42 sounds (phonemes) of the English language. Kindergarteners will master 61 of the 71 letter combinations (graphemes) that are commonly needed to represent these sounds on paper. They are taught in isolation (not with pictures or as sight words) as this is "explicit" phonics. Students will then have spelling words in which these phonemes and letter combination are used. Students will learn how to write a complete sentence and will also learn about nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

Math Skills:

During the year in kindergarten students will review foundational concepts. This includes number sense (one-to-one correspondence of numbers up to 20, and recognizing all numbers to 100). Students will memorize basic addition facts to the sum of ten and will solving and understanding subtraction problems. They will learn counting by 2,5, and 10's with proficiency and gain a basic understanding of tens and ones place, and words such as fewer/less, more/greater than. They will be able to compare sets, continue shape patterns, and identify 2-D and 3-D shapes. Students will identify and relate coin values and understand basic fraction concepts. Basic length and distance, basic weight/mass, capacity/volume, and time concepts are taught in the kindergarten year.
